Full Details of Michael O’Donnell Family Tree

A1. Michael ODonnell - Born 1749, died Mar 7, 1799, married Maria Cleary (born 1760, died Jul 27, 1807).  We believe Michael’s father was a Neil O’Donnellof Newport, Co Mayo. Michael may have had a brother named Neil and a brother Martin.  In any case, both this Michael and Neil O’Donnell are both buried in Killeen cemetery, located next to Sandhill, a town 4 miles west of Newport. The above Neil was for sure the great, great grandfather of Neil ODonnell (born ~1925) who lived in Sandhill in 2006.  Sandhill is located 4 miles west of Newport, Co Mayo.  The above Martin O’Donnell was for sure the great, great, great grandfather of Kevin O’Donnell (born 1925) who lived in Cleveland, Ohio in 2006.

Michael had the following four sons, not in order. Children:

B1. Owen (Rua or Red) - Born ~1780???, lived in Curraun, Achill

Owen was the father of my Achill, Co Mayo, born great grandfather, Neil O’Donnell, who immigrated to US from Currane/Gubnahardia, Achill Parish, Co Mayo, Ireland, in 1861.  Owen ODonnell and his wife, a woman named Gallagher from the Achill town of Currane, were my great, great grandparents.  Owen and Miss Gallagher had 8 children; 3 boys named John, Hugh and Neil who all immigrated to America and 5 daughters who married men from Currane and stayed in Currane.  Owen’s family is described at http://home.comcast.net/~hod7777/Owen.jpg .  Owen ODonnell and his family is believed to have lived in the now deserted village of Ailte, located about 2 miles west of Currane across Achill Sound.  A map of Newport, Currane, Achill Sound, and Ailte is at http://home.comcast.net/~hod7777/PictureClew.jpg . The village of Ailte was deserted when a new English landlord evicted 80 families in 1854 after the land was sold to a William Pike by the broke Newport Sir O’Donel’s in 1852.

It was a custom in Ireland to name your children after your father and grandfather.  My great grandfather Neil named his first two sons Michael (Neil’s grandfather’s name) and Owen (Neil’s father’s name).  Neil O’Donnell’s wife was Bridget Campbell from the Achill town of Currane.  Bridget’s father was a Patrick Campbel who died in Currane on February 28, 1869 at the age of 60.  Bridget’s mother was Mary Cattigan from Currane.  Neil and Bridget O’Donnell remained close to their Currane relatives after they immigrated to Cleveland. Neil O’Donnell’s neighbor’s in Currane/Gubnahardia were the Gallaghers, his mother’s relatives.  An Owen Biddy Gallagher of Currane had a brother, John T. Gallagher, who immigrated to the Cleveland in 1884 to marry Neil and Bridget’s daughter, Grace ODonnell, my grandfather’s sister. Please see more about the Gallagher- ODonnell-Cleveland to Currane Connection at  http://home.comcast.net/~hod7777/ODG2.jpg  .  Owen Gallagher, owner of Currane’s Compass Bar, still lives in Currane today (2005) near land formerly occupied by my great grandfather, Neil O’Donnell, before he immigrated to USA.  The location of Neil O’Donnell’s property and it relationship to the Compass Bar is shown at http://home.comcast.net/~hod7777/CorraunSatellite2005.jpg

B2. Manus – Born about 1780???, settled in Currane ( also spelled Corraun and Curraun), Achill Parish, Co. Mayo, located 5 miles west of DoughbegDoughbeg is located on the border of Burrishoole and Achill Parishes, on the north shore of Clew Bay, about 4 miles west of Mulranny in Co Mayo Ireland.  This Manus O’Donnell has 2005 relatives who live in Cloghmore, Derreen, and Sraheens on Achill Island across Achill Sound from Currane.

B3. HughBorn ~1780???, lived on Innishdaff island, parish of Kilmenna, father of the 9 children.

C1. Rev Michael O’Donnell - P.P. Kilmenna, born ???, died Good Friday 1898.

C2. Neil – Born ???, died March/April 1924 -

C3. Hugh – Born???, died Autumn 1924

C4-9 Owen, Rose, Manus, Anne, Bridget

B4. Neal O’Donnell  Most likely the oldest of the four sons of above Michael, born. I am guessing Neal was born about 1775???, he died between 1832 and 1855, he married Honor Sally Devir, Moynish Island, Clew Bay.  They bought a piece of land at Rossgallive located 3 miles east of Mulranny so their children could attend Rossgalive National School.  The 1832 Burrishoole Parish Tithe data indicates he occupied land in Doughbeg which his sons Neal (C5.), Manus (C4.), and Peter (C6.) then occupied in 1855 using Giffith Evauation Tax data. A Dennis O’Donnell also occupied land in Doughbeg with this Neal in 1832.  We don’t know who this Dennis O’Donnell is???  Dennis O’Donnell could be my great grandfather. And the father of Neal O’Donnell who immigrated to Cleveland in 1860???  The seven children of Neal and Honor Devir where:

C1. Michael O’Donnell – Born ~1810???, married Catherine Daly of Ballycroy, Ireland, sister of Michael Daly. They had two sons, Neal and either Patrick or Peter (similar spelling in Gaelic).  We don’t know much about Peter.  We know a lot about this Michael O’Donnell from Martin Daly now living in Palmerstown, Dublin 20, Ireland.  Michael was Martin Daly’s great grandfather.  Catherine Daly O’Donnell’s father was a tailor. Michael O’Donnell died young leaving widow Catherine and sons Neal and Pat (Peter). Once Michael died, Catherine immigrated to upstate NY, married a Burke, and began farming with son Pat (D2.)  Neal ( D1) stayed in Ireland moving to Doughbeg to stay with an uncle.  A nephew of Catherine Daly O’Donnell, John O’Donnell, came to USA to help Catherine manage the farm but he returned to Ireland where he died in 1948.

“Michael O’Donnell was called An Forranac because of his disposition to enter into conversation wherever he met an acquaintance.”

The two children of Michael O’Donnell and Catherine Daly were:

D1. Neal (of Mulranney) O’DonnellNeal was born July 4, 1838. He died June 1, 1927. He married Honor (Nora) Joyce ( died July 27, 1933 ) and lived in their shop, now John Daly’s Pub in Mulranny Village, Co Mayo. The Parent of Honor Joyce was a Peter Joyce whose mother was a Moran from Laherdane.  Peter’s wife, Honor’s mother, was Shelia Mullan.  Shelia Mullen’s parents were Margaret and Robert Grehan of Tiernaur, located between Mulranny and Newport. Neal and Honor O’Donnell had 10 children as follows.

E1. Patrick O’Donnell- Born Feb 4, 1867, Died September, 1939, farmer in Newport, historical writer, married Julie Carey on Aug 18, 1895 and then married Annie O’Donnell (no relation).  This man was a big historian.  His wife sold 3 Packing Cases of historical information found in the basement of Newport House.  These packing cases, #263-265, located in Historical Section of Ireland’s National Library, Kildare St, Dublin, could provide much additional information to expand the above family tree.  The information in these packing cases, as it pertained to the Newport O’Donel’s, is contained in Peter Mullowney’s Master Thesis, “The Expansion and Decline of the O’Donel Estate Newport, County Mayo – 1785-1852” prepared for National University of Ireland, Maynooth, July 2002.  His second wife sold the info in these packing cases to the library for 100 pounds.  Patrick was also known as Padraic ODomhniall

E2. JohnBorn June 8, 1869, died July 13, 1948, single, farmer and shopkeeper in Mulranney. His shop is now Daly’s Public House and Supermarket. John O’Donnell was the nephew who worked on Catherine Daly O’Donnell’s upstate NY farm.

Additional Commentary on the Above Family Tree

Please study the family tree offered above.  If you have any info to add, particularly as it might relate to the sons Owen (B1) and Manus (B2) of Michael O’Donnell (A1), please don’t hesitate to write me at hod77@aol.com.

This web site was updated May 19, 2006.

Martin Daly of Dublin has provided much of the data on the son of Michael O’Donnell (A1) and his Neal (B4.) However, we have little data on the three other sons of Michael O’Donnell (A1).  We know two of his sons, Owen and Manus, settled in Corraun.  I am searching for data on the sons Owen (B1), Manus (B2) and Hugh (B3).   Please help if you can.

Questions Remaining to Be Answered:

1.    Who is John O’Donnell (born ~1820) of Mulranny, who married Catherine Masterson( born ~1840)?

2.    Is this Mulranny John O’Donnell related to above O’Donnell’s?

The Children of John O’Donnell (farmer  born ~1820 ) and Catherine Masterson ( born ~1840) where:

1.     Patrick – Born 1864

2.     Mary – Born 1866

3.     Bridget – Born 1868

4.     Martin – Born 1871

5.     Thomas – Born 1873

6.     Anne – Born 1876

7.     Manus - (1877)

8.     Honor/Nora - (1879)

9.

The above John O’Donnell is believed to be a close relative of the Doughbeg O’Donnell’s listed above but no one knows for sure.
